Meditation

One of the things I hear a lot is people complaining that meditation doesn’t work for them. It always seems a little self-defeatist: if you’re trying to make it a part of your life, but you’re already sure that you suck, then you’re bound to fail.

The thing is, meditation isn’t something you do. You can set aside time for it and tell yourself, ‘right, I’m going to meditate now’, but that can be the wrong approach. By setting it apart from your everyday life, you’re making it something special. But meditation isn’t about specialness: it’s about letting go and allowing yourself to just be. To notice the sounds and scents around you without lingering on them, without trying to puzzle out what they are or what they mean. It’s a time to be mindful: to focus on your breathing, on the amazing gift that your breath is, the gift your body is. And you can do this in your everyday life, not just in special moments you set aside.

When you get up in the morning, savour the first time your foot touches the ground. The first time you go outside in the morning, take a deep breath and just allow yourself to appreciate the gift of fresh air. As you eat your breakfast, take a moment to focus on the taste, the texture, the temperature.

All of this is meditation too, increasing your harmony with your own body and the world around you. As with all of yoga, meditation is a practice, and the more you do it, the easier it becomes.
